Bart Kelso
Interim Pastor

Rev. Barton Kelso served as Pastor of First United Presbyterian Church in Cambridge for 25 years (1982-2007) and is now honorably retired.  Bart grew up near Baltimore, and came to faith in Christ during high school there.  Following college and graduate school in the Philadelphia area, he joined the staff of Young Life, a parachurch youth ministry, which he helped pioneer in Greater Boston.  From 1970-1981 he worked with special needs kids in the Newton Public Schools.  As a member of the Boston Presbytery, Bart has been Commissioner to Synod (1984) and General Assembly (1999), Moderator (1990), and has served on numerous committees.  His several terms on Committee on Preparation for Ministry (CPM), along with his current term on Synod’s Early Ministry Institute, have been especially enjoyable and are congruent with his mentoring of many seminarians from Harvard Divinity, Gordon-Conwell, and BU School of Theology, while at Cambridge. He has long had “a love affair with God’s Creation,” and is one of the tour guides at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum. Bart is also a trained Interim Minister, and served in this capacity at Fort Square P.C. from July ’09 through August ’10.  From October ’10 to April ’11 Pastor Bart and his wife Priscilla were visiting professors at Silliman University in the Philippines, Priscilla’s home country, where he taught at the Divinity School and she taught a graduate literature course. The Kelsos will soon celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary. They live in Newton, and have a married daughter, Rachel, who works with a global philanthropic organization.
