Leadership
The Presbyterian form of government is representative, with members from the congregation elected by the congregation to serve on the Session as Elders. Each level of government (Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly) is composed of elected representatives from the preceding level. General AssemblyThe "GA" meets every other year to decide matters of doctrine and interpretation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) constitution, and to mediate disputes referred by presbyteries and synods. SynodConsiders matters referred by presbyteries and hears appeals on all issues except doctrine. We are part of the Synod of the Northeast. PresbyteryMeets bimonthly to decide on matters of personnel, ordination of ministers, church discipline, election of representatives to governing bodies, and whatever pertains to the spiritual welfare of the churches under its care. There are 25 churches represented in the Presbytery of Boston. SessionIs the governing body of the local church, made up of the Pastor(s) and the Elders. At present, Bethany Presbyterian Church has 1 Pastor and 5 Elders serving on Session. Beginning in 2010 we will have 7 Elders serving on Session. 2 Elders are appointed each year to represent Bethany at Presbytery, along with the Pastor(s). The Elders are assisted in their ministry leadership by the Pastor(s) and other paid professional staff. Each Elder leads at least one area of ministry in the life of the church in partnership with members of the congregation-at-large. These Ministry Teams meet as often as necessary to carry out their mission. The Session meets once a month for study, mutual support, to pray for one another and for the church, and to share news, coordinate their various ministries, and vote on business that requires formal approval. |
